Sorority Recruitment Tips
Sorority Recruitment Tips
You're headed off to college and want to go through sorority recruitment—yeah! Confetti flies!
Now, you have a lot of questions. Do you need to find the right team to help you through the recruitment process? For that matter, you may be asking: what exactly is the sorority recruitment process?
Find Your Letters is here to help! With over twenty-five collective years of experience on the sorority chapter side, we’ve seen amazing girls go through recruitment every year. However, some miss out on having the best experience because they don’t have a personal plan.
No doubt you’ll hear a lot about résumé packets, recommendations, and senior pictures. Those are certainly important, but what else should you be thinking about? Below are some essential sorority recruitment tips—also known as sorority rush tips—that we think you should know!
Get a dedicated calendar for recruitment planning. If you use a digital calendar on your phone, assign a unique, bold color just for recruitment-related tasks. Senior year is packed with events, and it’s easy to overlook important recruitment prep items when August feels so far away.
Create a reminder on your phone for essential to-dos by creating an event and adding a notification. You can set alerts to remind you days or weeks in advance to help you stay on track.
Decide if you love the senior pics you took in the fall. If so, great, but if not, call a photographer now because the great ones book up fast, and you’ll need high-quality photos for your recruitment packet.
Good time management will make getting ready for recruitment much easier. We suggest you lay out your calendar and look at what you have scheduled from your senior year spring break through Bid day. Block out those graduation parties and activities. Add in scheduled summer trips and vacations. Then include recruitment preparation items, including when you will have your photos taken, request all your recommendations, send out your resume, register for recruitment, shop for recruitment outfits, and move into the dorm.
Create a resume that makes you shine. Set aside time to craft a one-page résumé that highlights your accomplishments. Need an example? Follow us on Instagram @findyourletters and DM us “resume example.” Make sure you explain what the activities or awards mean. Don’t assume the reader will understand. We suggest you have someone who doesn’t know your high school read your resume. While NHS - National Honor Society is well understood, “Pace Ambassador” will need a brief description.
Let friends and family know you are planning on going through recruitment. You will most certainly find women in your life who are sorority alumnae, and they are a great resource for getting recommendations.
Follow your college’s Panhellenic Instagram. They will be the first to announce important recruitment dates you will want to make sure you know! When you see key dates posted, add them to your calendar and set that notification.
Google your college’s Panhellenic website and bookmark that page. It’s a great resource for answering recruitment-related questions, and you will be glad you have it readily available.
Make sure you check your college-assigned email regularly! Add that account to your cell phone so you get the alerts because many colleges will send important recruitment information exclusively to your college email.
Look for an early move-in option for your campus. Some Panhellenics offer an early move-in option when you register for recruitment. If your school does, take advantage of it! You will want the time to get settled in before in-person party rounds on your campus.
Plan for the recruitment registration fee. The amount will be listed on your college’s Panhellenic website. Make sure you have your debit or credit card available when you get to this step.
Purchase a second recruitment t-shirt if the option is available. Most Panhellenics provide a t-shirt for the first in-person recruitment round, included in your registration fee. If given the option to buy a second, go for it! Fall recruitment is notoriously hot, and you’ll appreciate a fresh shirt for the second half of round one. Laundry is the last thing you will want to worry about!
Shop for your recruitment outfits early in the season, think May and June. If you wait until after July 4th you may not have nearly as many options because retailers begin shifting their inventory to fall transition pieces.
Having recruitment tasks mapped out in your calendar and tackling them systematically will make the experience much less stressful.
Joining a sorority can be one of the best parts of your college life and the first step is recruitment.
You’ve got this, and we’re cheering you on! 🎉💕
